Quest of the Companions is a fork of the Exult engine by XCAST3D (who goes by Ill_Command_1200 on Reddit, where the project was first announced) that adds three new systems to Ultima VII: The Black Gate: co-op multiplayer, a keyboard-driven targeting system, and companion class skills.

In co-op mode, the host plays as the Avatar, and up to seven other players each control a companion, with four more slots for spectators. Players connect directly by IP on port 1992 or through a lobby service that issues join codes, and cross-play is supported between the Windows and Mac versions. Co-op adds overhead chat, whispers, emotes, a player list, and a minimap. A “leash” system stops companions from straying too far from the Avatar, and the host’s saves are shared by everyone.

The targeting system lets players cycle through people and creatures with Q, through objects with E, and use Space to talk, open, take, use, read or attack. It also adds inventory sorting and a “Take All” command when looting fallen foes. The optional class system gives each companion three skills based on their Ultima IV class, unlocked at levels 1, 4 and 7. AI controls companions that no one is playing; these act according to their class. The Avatar also gets three spell quickslots, and the game supports keyboard movement with the now-standard WASD layout, as well as Xbox, PlayStation and Steam controllers.

As of October 2026, Quest of the Companions is in early release. Its developer has not yet finished a full co-op playthrough. Serpent Isle support is planned, and the source code will be published on GitHub once testing is complete.
